The role of sanation therapy of the nasopharynx and oral cavity in the prevention of purulent complications of the upper respiratory tract in patients on prolonged artificial ventilation

Abstract


Concomitant secondary bacterial inflammation often significantly complicates the course of the underlying di­sease in patients of the intensive care unit. In recent years, more attention has been paid to nosocomial sinusitis as a purulent-septic disease of the nasopharynx. Difficult outflow of exudate due to concomitant edema and infiltration of the mucous membrane reduces the likelihood of recovery, even with adequate antibiotic therapy, which provides sterilization of the sinus secretion. Therefore, antibiotic therapy must be combined with active local treatment. The use of 0.02% decamethoxin solution for the complex of sanation therapy of the nasal cavity, oropharynx and the treatment of acute purulent rhinosinusitis complicated by pharyngitis is an effective method for controlling the dissemination of nosocomial infection, which allows reducing the average duration of stay in the intensive care unit, reducing the duration of antibiotic use, and had no side effects. Unlike the standard application scheme for the treatment of acute purulent rhinosinusitis and pharyngitis with chlorhexidine-containing drugs and furacilin, 0.02% decamethoxin solution allows simultaneous sanation of the nose, paranasal sinuses and pharynx. It does not have a toxic effect on the ciliated epithelium and does not cause allergic reactions.
