Single-Shot Femoral Nerve Block with 0.25% Bupivacaine in Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

A.H. Tiutiunnik

Abstract

Objective: to assess the effectiveness of a single-shot femoral nerve block with 0.25% bupivacaine in arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
Materials. Patients were divided into two groups of 20 people. In the first group we used systemic administration of analgesics. In the second group we additionally performed single-shot femoral nerve block with 0.25% bupivacaine. The level of pain, the time to first analgesic requirement, side effects, patient satisfaction with postoperative analgesia for up to 48 hours after surgery were determined.
Results. The time to first analgesic requirement increased in the second group (p < 0.05). During the first 24 hours, the level of pain at rest (p < 0.05) and 18 hours — the level of pain on movement in the second group (p < 0.05) decreased. Patient satisfaction with postoperative analgesia was higher in the second group. Analgesics consumption and incidence of side effects did not differ in the two groups.
Conclusions. Single-shot femoral nerve block with 0.25% bupivacaine reduced the severity of pain after arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
